Abstract

Biologics are proteins derived from living organisms through recombinant technologies that mimic or block the function of natural proteins. They are generally immune modulators, which operate through stimulation or suppression of the immune system.

In dermatology, immunosuppressives are in part newly used in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis) and cancer (cutaneous T-cell lymphomas), and in part historically i.e. in the treatment of alopecia areata (dinitrochlorobenzene).
