Diabetic retinopathy

Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an ocular complication of diabetes mellitus. Poorly compensated diabetes affects the small blood vessels in the eyes, which become clogged, thus violating the blood supply to the retina (the layer that ensures vision).

The second way the retina is affected is because the blood vessels "do not seal", fluid flows out of them and causes swelling of the retina.
