Arthroscopy is a commonly used surgical technique; it is minimally invasive. Nevertheless, it does present some risks, especially in terms of improperly used or positioned approaches and portals.
In this article, arthroscopic approaches to major joints are introduced. Surgical approaches are described according to their use in different arthroscopic procedures.
The risks of improperly used or positioned approaches are specified as well as a few hints for various techniques and various joints. The most commonly used approaches are described, yet there are also others which are no longer employed, such as superomedial portal in knee arthroscopy.
This portal was used for saline supply to the joint.
