Abstract

The incidence of short bowel syndrome (SBS) is increasing. SBS is one of the causes of intestinal failure.

The lenght of remaining intestine is important for determining the metabolic consequences of the SBS. SBS is a functional definition, implying a significant amount of malabsorption, steatorhea, dehydration, excessive fluid and electrolyte losses and malnutrition.

Etiology of intestinal failure. Physiologic changes and adaptation in SBS patient- three periods of adaptation.
