Improvements in therapy (new medications and especially self-monitoring) made it possible to provide most of the diabetes management on the outpatient basis. Besides special problems related to complications and recently diagnosed cases of severely decompensated diabetes, the overwhelming majority of diabetes related problems can now be solved without the need of hospitalization.
The management of type 2 diabetes is based on education, lifestyle changes and treatment with metformin. In the next line, we can use combined pharmacological intervention - incretins, sulfonylureas, pioglitazone, acarbose and insulin.
Meticulous treatment of hypertension and hyperlipidemia also forms an integral part of diabetes management.
