Abstract

The therapeutic goal in patients with type 2 diabetes is complication risk reduction by intervention to control hyperglycemia. Postprandial hyperglycemia is a cardiovascular risk factor.

To achieve the target level of glycated hemoglobin, intervention may be needed to control not only the fasting but also the postprandial blood glucose level. The postprandial blood glucose level influences the total glycated hemoglobin level: the lower the total glycated hemoglobin level, the greater the influence of the postprandial blood glucose level.

When choosing the drug therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus, consideration should be given to the difference between the fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels.
