Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic and progressive disease in the sense of a gradual deterioration of metabolic compensation. Prior to the onset of type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance is compensated by increasing insulin secretion.
During the transition from impaired glucose tolerance to diabetes, there is a significant reduction in the first phase of insulin secretion.
