Lower respiratory tract infections

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

In the lower airways (DCD), the presence of bacteria under physiological conditions prevents ciliary epithelium, airway mucus and microphages. Failure of any of these functions allows inflammation to occur.

Inflammations of the lower respiratory tract include: tracheitis, resp. acute tracheobronchitis, acuta bronchitis, bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis is rare in children.

Most diagnoses in primary practice are intended without further ancillary tests to distinguish between viral and bacterial inflammation. Many diseases are unnecessarily treated with antibiotics.
