Lower limb lymphoedema is a major source of morbidity following surgery for the treatment of gynaecological cancer - lymphadenectomy. The condition of lower limb lymphoedema presents as swelling of one or both legs, typically within the first 12 months after treatment and, once developed, often becomes chronic.
The highest prevalence of lymphoedema is among patients after surgical treatment for vulvar cancer and the lowest after ovarian cancer surgery. Women at risk of lymphoedema would benefit from instructions about early signs and symptoms, because appropriate diagnosis and treatment are necessary to improve the quality of life.
