Pregnancy and the puerperium are among the physiological thrombophilic conditions and the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is four to six times greater in pregnancy. This risk further increases in the presence of other risk factors.
Congenital thrombophilic conditions are among these risk factors and, in addition to the risk of VTE, may be a risk factor for other obstetric complications. Therefore, early diagnosis of these conditions and rational prophylactic measures may minimize VTE and obstetric complications.
