Addressing therapeutic dilemmas in older women

Abstract

Based on randomized trials, we know that the use of hormonal therapy (regardless of the type of preparation) generally increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis and vascular events. If we want to describe this risk mathematically, for 1,000 women receiving hormone therapy for ten years, we can expect 18 cases of deep vein thrombosis, six cases of myocardial infarction and eight cases of stroke in the group of users.

The increased risk of deep vein thrombosis is highest in the first year of use and follows for another five years.
