Odontofobie - a problem in providing dental care

Abstract

Odontofobie is one of the types of specific phobias shift to anxiety disorders. Can seriously complicate the provision of dental care.

People avoid dental care: are dentist fear, and pain treatment. It is for individual dental health problem, may be negatively affected by chewing food, tooth loss is then limited and speech.

Logically, this can lead to reduced confidence of the individual (broken smile, breath), a change in social status, employment status and his interpersonal relationships. When finally subscribing to the dentist, it is only when they are plagued by very severe pain or other serious problem.

Then, but dental treatment is more invasive, uncomfortable, and longer fear deepens. Odontofobie Context is not only a medical but biopsychosocial.

Therefore, in the introductory part of the paper first defines the specific (isolated) phobias and diferencionálně-diagnostic criteria. Furthermore, we describe odontofobii and its relationship to fear of pain.

Treatment odontofobie requires cooperation between dentist and psychotherapist and includes pharmacotherapy, psychotherapeutic use of dentist-patient relationship and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
