Psychology of chronic pain in dentistry

Abstract

Dentist in his clinical practice meets with acute pain or chronic pain problems with teeth, head, neck, face or ear. Chronic pain is a complex problem.

The patient often returns to the dental clinic, a doctor often difficult to communicate and cooperate, does not comply with treatment, more time is needed, medicines, further tests or surgery and is therefore co-operation with experts from other medical disciplines, including mental health professionals. In this article we want to introduce the role of psychology in the treatment of chronic pain in dentistry.

Article first defines pain. It also describes biopsychosocial model of chronic pain and the different reactions to pain.

Some of the common psychological factors influencing the overall experience of chronic pain such as fear, depression and coping strategies. Therefore, one possibility is a multidisciplinary chronic pain treatment and psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy.
