The main indication for surgical therapy of chronic pancreatitis is algic syndrome which cannot be treated either conservatively or endoscopically. The outcome of the surgical therapy is affected by the character of CHP, the type of surgical procedure and experience of operative team.
Surgical procedure is a palliative treatment affecting complications of CHP and not its cause. There is not an ideal surgical procedure and therefore short-term results of individual types of surgical procedures differ considerably as far as long-term effects are concerned.
Apart from low morbidity, mortality and a long-term affect on algic syndrome, the success of surgical therapy is measured by improvement of patient's quality of life with social and professional rehabilitation of patients with chronic pancreatitis.
