Decubitus ulcers, also known as pressure ulcers, pressure sores or bedsores, are wounds caused by prolonged pressure and they pose a major health problem in selected groups of patients (such as the elderly or immobilized). In addition to pressure, the extent of skin tissue damage is related to a number of other factors.
Besides the key risk factors and clinical presentation, major attention will be paid to recommended and necessary preventive measures and current therapeutic options for decubitus ulcers. Emphasis will be placed on medicinal and other products available in pharmaceutical service establishments as part of both reimbursed and unreimbursed care and on the possible involvement of a pharmacist, e. g. by means of consultation for the purpose of selecting suitable products particularly intended for preventing pressure sores.
