Dendritic cells are recognized as key players in the development of immune response. They stay also in the center of all steps of allergic reaction, from sensitisation to the ongoing allergic march.
Presented review summarized current knowledge concerning DC history, their populations and function. The role of DC is further discussed with regard to the specific allergic diseases as asthma, atopic dermatitis and food allergy.
DCs are currently in the center of interest as target cell for specific allergen immunotherapy. The generation of tolerogenic DC and subsequently regulatory T cells in the therapeutic process is the goal for further research in the field of allergology.
