Abstract

Pneumonia is the leading cause of death from infectious disease in developed countries. The most common causative bacterial pneumonia in children and adults is Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Bacteremia (with the risk of metastatic infection) is in pneumococcal pneumonia in up to 25% of cases. In children causes pneumococcal pneumonia most complications - empyema.
