Abstract

Proctitis is an inflammation of the anus, which manifests itself by non-specific symptoms. Aetiology of proctitis can be both infectious and non-infectious.

Infectious proctitis also include sexually transmitted infections, but this aetiology is rarely considered in practice. Clinical and laboratory examination is the key to correctly diagnosing the specific disease; the treatment is either antibiotic or antiviral.

Proctitis is a type of disease that demands a complex approach, including adjustments to the patient's daily regime and examination all their sexual partners. In cases of sexually transmitted infections being detected, the physician is obliged to report them.
