Significant progress has been achieved recently in the cytogenetic and molecular research of the kidney parenchymal tumors which incidence has been steadily increasing in the developed countries. Renal cancer is an important clinical problem, still without effective therapy.
The accuracy of current diagnosis, prognosis of the disease and the effectiveness of the treatment are limited by the poor understanding of its cytogenetic and molecular pathogenic mechanisms. In this review we summarize up to date cytogenetic alterations and gene expression profiles of the most important tumor genes, focusing at the classification of parenchyma tumors of adult patients.
