The paper attempts to show that a constitution of new approach to poetry in France at the beginning of the 20th century is largely indebted to the heritage of the previous era, especially to the numerous desiderata of Symbolism. Drawing on a short analysis of Jacob's Cornet a dès, a collection of poetry famous for its avant-garde nature, I aim to demonstrate that the role of the reader and the requirement of coherence of the poetical image would not have been the same without the revolutionary shift of the Symbolists.
