Abstract
Using examples of the literary motif of cricket, the essay points to growth of semantic associations linked with using this "object" (wu) in Chinese poetry. It is also discussed how the treatment of a literary motif is related both to the observation of reality and and to the study of earlier (mainly canonical) texts.
Cricket as a cutlural phenomenon interconnecting ancient and modern China is briefly touched upon as well.
