This paper discusses current students' nicknames. Based on the relatively rich linguistic material (825 nicknames), which we have obtained by research carried out in Prague secondary schools, we have tried to describe the current linguistic tendencies of nicknames.
Nicknames are divided into nine categories on the basis of linguistic motivation, we tried to describe them and we also discuss their productivity. In our material prevailed nicknames, that originated mainly from personal names (first names and surnames) or were inspired by the appearance of person who is called by the nickname
