Nothing More Happened That Winter.: The Analysis of Narrative Time in Old Norse Sagas

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

The aim of the book is to reconstruct the Old Norse people's understanding of time and to show to what extent it differed from the way modern man understands time. Old Norse people have never directly described their images of time, but their conception of time mirrors itself in their literary works, especially the sagas.

Therefore, in this book the reconstruction of the Old Norse understanding of time is based on the analysis of narrative time in the Old Norse sagas. The main attention is paid to the Sagas of Icelanders that show us the way Old Norse people behaved and thought which makes them an ideal study material.
