From Iberian Romani to Caló from Morphosyntactic Perspective: an Outline of the Phases of Development

Abstract

The article deals with the evolution of Caló (mixed language of Romani and Spanish) with regards to the vestiges of the Romani morphology documented in the linguistic material dated between the 16th and 21st century. Based on my observation I am going to propose three phases of development of Caló: the flexive phase of the Iberian Romani, the phase of a mixed language and the phase of the ethnolect of Spanish.

Each of the phases is characterized by a set of features that will be described, with special attention to the problematic of the nominal, pronominal and verbal inflection and the way of adoption of the Spanish loanwords. I have chosen several linguistic sources (representative of each phase) with the objective to prove the tendencies that I propose.
