Abstract

The possibility to individualize pharmacological treatment is in psychiatry mostly developed in schizophrenia. It is based on a proper choice of antipsychotic medicament, and a correct dosage in individual patient.

The choice of an antipsychotic is influenced by dynamics of the disease, clinical picture, adverse effects in individual patient, patient's preference and pharmacogenetics. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is an optimum way to keep an adequate blood level of the medicament.

Indications of TDM are following: Setting a proper dose of the medicament at the beginning of treatment, suspection of the patient's non-adherence, insufficient efficacy, serious adverse effects, suspected genetic polymorphisms related to pharmacokinetics, and adverese interactions of medicaments.
