The relation of movement education to selected periods in the aging process

Due to improper lifestyle habits, the number of psychosomatic and other lifestyle diseases in the population of older adults and seniors is growing. This situation, for the greater part, also results from the lack of physical activity in the daily routine of individuals.

One of the causes is the form of movement education, focusing mainly on sports performance, applied for children within Physical Education lessons in schools and continuing up to the category of seniors. The low level of physical literacy in the population does not motivate for lifestyle changes.

The purpose of our study is to propose a change in the concept of movement education within the preparation for old age, for older adults and seniors, summarize the knowledge about the concept of physical literacy and its contents, introduce the possibilities of the application of locomotor training for selected typical age groups, give examples of the relation of individual components of physical literacy to certain periods in the aging process. The physical literacy framework includes the issues of physical activity and health-related physical fitness, the need for training, resilience and social cohesion.

Five groups of exercises from the inventory of gymnastics activities were selected to form the content of basic locomotor training of adults and seniors: posture, locomotion, balance, flexibility and handling skills. The knowledge of the benefits of physical activity has also proved important.
