Abstract

The issue of vaccination against Lyme disease (LB) was reopened by the renowned American vaccinologist Stanley Plotkin in 2011. This infectious disease with no human-to-human transmission has been repeatedly reported from Europe, North America (area north of Mexican border to the northern part of Canada), northern parts of Asie, northern Africa, and lately also from Australia.

In Canada, LB was added to the list of reportable communicable diseases in 2010 due to its increasing incidence. The numbers of infected people have been rising during recept years in the Eastern and Central Europe as well. In the Czech Republic, LB is one of the most frequent zoonoses with naturally occuring foci.

A total of 4834 infections were reported in the Czech Republic during the year 2011.
