The article deals with pragmatic functions of the Czech particle jako treating it as a modificator of the utterance meaning. Differences between parasitic (filling) vs modificating jako are shown, as well as the three main types of functional variations brought about by the presence of this modificator (A - speaker's interpretation, B - speaker's request for verification, C - speaker's reference to implicit meaning or meaning presupposed at the part of the addressee).
The general function observable in all three variations is called reliefization since, as a device of speaker's communicative strategy, jako marks speaker's and addressee's levels of the utterance meaning.
