The journey as a topic of the modernist prose

Abstract

During the epoch known as fin de siecle the journey has a rich and diverse range of forms. And it fulfils sundry goals: chronicle, know, understand, dream...

Besides real journeys there are also imaginary ones. The modernists and their protagonist go above all to Paris, considered the personification of whole epoch, as the centre of everything new, as a sanctuary of artists; but they also travel to the past and even to the futture - when they seek a place for themselves and their countries.

That is not all. We can find journeys to fantastic worlds and to artificial paradise.

So the modernism presents not only horizontal journeys, but also a vertical pilgrimage towards oneself, god or the harmony of the universe.
