Theology is an inescapable context of Christian literary works of any era. The article studies the relationship of some important stories of the death of the bishops in the 4th and 5th century, inserted in the theological controversies of the time, esp. of the Pelagian controversy that determines the reading of four stories of the death of the bishops: Vita Martini of Sulpicius Severus with the letters of the same author, the Vita Ambrosii, written by Paulinus of Milan, the Vita Augustini, composed by Possidius of Calama and the story of the death of St.
Paulinus of Nola written by the priest Uranius.
