Unfortunate Falls, Bladder Stones, and Plagues. Religious Medicine of St. Franciscus Xavier

Abstrakt

The chapter deals with two interconnected topics. In the first part I discuss the healing miracles ascribed to St.

Francis Xavier in the 17th century Bohemia in order to show how the religious narrative ventured into the area of medicine. The second part of the paper describes the same process but from the opposite point of view.

I use early modern medical texts to show how theological questions were tackled by physicians.
