The present study discusses the importance of word formation in foreign language teaching and learning and the status of outer texts of bilingual dictionaries as foreign language learning tools. It is argued that (a) due to its prominent role in the process of language acquisition, the word formation should be (more substantially) incorporated into foreign language teaching approaches, at least at an advanced level of language proficiency, and that (b) outer texts of bilingual dictionaries should not be treated as of merely cosmetic value.
Instead, they should be utilized, among other things, for accomodation of information on word formation related phenomena. This information provided in outer texts of two relatively recent German-Czech dictionaries is examined here.
