Electromagnetic fields surrouding us in our environment originate from both natural and manmade sources. While those of natural origin, mainly geomagnetic field of the Earth, which creates so called Earth's Magnetosphere, are useful - for the reason of protection all living creatures against lethal effects of the space radiation - the artificial EMFs arising from man activities, named electrosmog, can be harmful to human health.
On the basis of results of epidemiological studies, an increased risk for childhood leukemia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, adult brain cancers associated with Extremely Low Frequency EMF, was by World Health Organization declared. Therefore, WHO issued Fact sheet No 322, June 2007, Electromagnetic fields and public health; Exposure to extremely low frequency fields, dealing with precautions against the negative impacts of ELF-EMFs.
Despite continuous research, the evidences about negative impact of high frequency EMFs are not so consistent as they are in case of ELF-EMFs. Nevertheless, because of dramatic world wide increase of mobile phone users, the WHO issued Fact sheet No 193, June 2011, Electromagnetic fields and public health: mobile phones.
Its content, in addition to determining the limit dose in the tissues of the absorbed radiation SAR, based on the recommendations of the IARC, also deals with provisions relating to the classification of RF electromagnetic radiation in group 2B, with possible carcinogenic effects on humans. It is because of EMFs interaction with biological systems may cause oxidative stress.
Given that free oxygen radicals, in addition to physiological processes, also act as an important pathogenetic factor in many diseases, such as cancer, neurodegeneration, etc., this article pays attention mainly to the last published evidences with the aim to contribute to the proper assessment of previously obtained results and to right way preparation of further necessary research of this issue.
