Abstract
The essay compares the so-called First Portuguese Modernism and the "Heroic Phase" of the Modernism in Brazil. Choosing three pronounced aspects of the movements - Absorption, Primitivism and Tortured Soul - is a starting point for a search of different constellation of Modernist and Avant-Garde elements in the two homonymous literary currents.
