Abstract
The paper provides a characteristic of Jan Ámos Komenský's (John Amos Comenius's) collection of proverbs and saying "Moudrost starých Čechů", presented against the background of his life, pedagogical principles and philosophy. Comenius's lifelong collecting of proverbs is seen as a result of his quest for "gathering pieces of wisdom".
Both the conception of the collection and Comenius's tentative definitions of proverbs and other phrasemes are discussed in the paper.
