Reading literacy is currently becoming the object of attention, not only for the research specialists, but also for the teachers. One of the reasons for this attention is the increasing need of efficient work with information.
Reading literacy is an important part of the functional literacy, through which an individual is capable to work with the text, search it for information, evaluate it critically, and use it to solve everyday situations. Despite the fact, that according to well know international researches, reading literacy in Czech pupils is relatively high, there is still a continuing need to look for possibilities to support and develop reading skills.
This paper represents basic theoretical solutions for determination of these issues, refers to the results of international researches and presents the chosen methodological approach for research surveys in the field of reading literacy of primary school pupils.
