Abstract
Outlining the history of Bohumil Trnka's three-part analysis of English, first published as a mimeographed university textbook and preserved only in a few copies, the foreword points out that it is Trnka's only work presenting an elaboration of his conception of the language system as a structure of four hierarchically organized levels. Of these, the book presents analyses of the three lower levels, the phonological, morphological and syntactic.
The foreword also surveys Trnka's academic career and notes other major spheres of his professional interests.
