The text-book introduces evolution of Tibetan notions of afterlife from the early period of the Tibetan history up to the various later forms of adaptations by Buddhism. The book contains commented translations of extracts from Tibetan texts and focuses on non-Buddhist ideas about the afterlife, the specific understandings of afterlife within Tantric Buddhism, the variety of funeral rituals performed in Tibet, the ways of perception of the afterlife from the side of laity and the Chinese influence on them.
Some extracts are translated from the Tibetan for the first time and the text includes translations of extracts from the recently discovered manuscripts.
