Abstract

The study informs about overseas missions of Austro-hungarian navy with focus on a period between 1857 and 1914. For Austria-Hungary, these missions were important because of economic interests of the monarchy, representation and training of crews and due to the last two reasons, the type of ships sent on these missions are mentioned too in the text.

Apart from that, colonial ambitions of some Austrian politicians deserved attention, since any colonial attempt would have to be supported by the navy. In the study, the known journeys of frigate Novara around the Earth and the arctic mission of Admiral Tegetthoff are described, as well as routine missions that followed in the period between 1871 and 1914.
