Bronchiectasis is characterised by dilated thick-walled bronchi. Identification of underlying cause is strongly advised, because it may change the therapeutical approach in patients with immunodeficiencies, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis or alfa-1-antitrypsin deficiency.
Typical symptom of patients with bronchiectasis includes chronic cough, in patients with extensive disease with purulent expectoration. Diagnosis is made by high resolution computed tomography (HRCT).
Treatment of patients with bronchiectasis involves identification of underlying cause, maintain or improve pulmonary function, reducing acute exacerbations and improvement quality of life of patients.
