Fairy-tale and fantastic characters and the selected Slavic languages - the problem of the "questionable" grammatical gender

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

The article presents the problem of the grammatical gender in fairy-tale and fantasy characters. It shows the discrepancy between the grammatical gender and the natural gender in the names of the most popular children's characters such as Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella, as well as characters from fantasy books and computer games which have gained popularity amongst youth.

The examples presented in the article show the disturbance on a syntactical level, between the grammatical gender of said characters and their attributes. Based on these examples one can notice the superiority of the natural gender over the grammatical gender.
