This article summarizes the results of research into the construction history of Mšec chateau (in the Rakovník district), conducted in 2012-2013. The main focus is on the renaissance form of this landmark.
This was subsequently fundamentally changed by layers of baroque and neoclassical modifications so that it is now quite complicated to reconstruct, both on the basis of extant though often radically rebuilt structures and partially reused architectural elements, and on the basis of well-preserved archival sources. Despite being necessarily hypothetical, the conclusions presented here represent fairly serious findings that clearly complement our ideas of the rural settlements of the lower nobility between 1575-1620, ie. during the reign of emperor Rudolf II, which was an extremely powerful and inspiring period for Bohemia, both culturally and socially.
