The Origin of the World: Hesiod's Cosmology

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2014

Abstract

The monograph consists of a systematic reconstruction of the cosmological ideas which can be found in Hesiod's epic poem Theogony. The first part tracks the cosmogenesis from the perspective of a genealogy of divine powers and follows the successor myth.

The second part reconstructs the process of the spatial structuration of the world and tracks basic cosmological differences: the difference of the Chaos and the Earth, representing the indifference and definiteness, and the spatial scales which structure the universe both vertically (the Earth and the Underworld, the Earth and the Heaven) and horizontally (the Mountains and the Sea).
