Evolution and the sources of variation of semantic organs

Abstract

The goal of the following work is to formulate certain basic principles of semantic morphology which would help interpret the external appearance of organisms. Central to semantic morphology is the concept of a semantic organ.

This notion is inspired by two sources, both rooted in the intellectual environment of continental biology, namely the phenomenological zoology of Adolf Portmann and Jakob von Uexküll's theory of the Umwelt.
