Impact of single versus double vessel carotid disease on long-term survival in patients treated with carotid stenting

Abstrakt
Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is a therapeutic alternative to endarterectomy in patients with significant carotid artery stenosis. It has been demonstrated that patients with bilateral carotid artery disease ("double-vessel" disease) compared to unilateral disease ("single-vessel" disease) have a tendency towards a higher occurrence of early post-procedural adverse events, which is mainly driven by the higher occurrence of early post-CAS transient ischemic attacks.
In this study, we report the long-term survival of patients after CAS with regard to the extent of baseline carotid atherosclerosis (single- versus double-vessel carotid disease) and compare all-cause mortality in each group with the sex- and age-matched general population.
