The Emperor Rudolph's End: the End of an Artistic Style?

Publication at Catholic Theological Faculty |
2014

Abstract

The article deals with the question as to what kind of style those artists engaged in the court of Rudolph II in Prague, between the 80th of 16th century till the emperor's death in 1612, represent. It seems impossible to describe Rudolphine art with one label embracing the entire artistic style.

The art in Prague was the art of the court where the principal commissioner was the emperor himself. Rudolph was perhaps one of the last tolerant rulers at the time period, followed immediately by emperors ideologically establishing the form, content, and goals of visual arts, literature, and science.
