Monogenic forms of diabetes: they are more common than we have thought so far

Abstract

Monogenic forms of diabetes are caused by a single gene defect. It is estimated that they affect 1-5% of all diabetic patients.

Monogenic diabetes clinically manifests either as MODY or rarely as neonatal diabetes. Most patients with monogenic diabetes are still awaiting proper diagnosis.

Correctly determining the type of monogenic diabetes is important for the patient, because it enables optimal therapy to be implemented.
