Abstract
Pantoprazole is a representative of a group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. As a new development and in addition to its sodium salt, pantoprazole is now also available as a magnesium salt that is indicated for the treatment of reflux esophagitis in individuals older than 12 years.
Additionally, it is indicated in adults for the treatment of gastric and duodenal peptic ulcers, Zollinger- -Ellison syndrome and other conditions characterised by pathological hydrochloric acid hypersecretion. The agent's efficacy and safety has been demonstrated in a number of clinical studies, adding a new therapeutic option based on its somewhat different pharmacokinetic parameters.
