Abstract
The chapter introduces a wide and often contradictory spectrum of definitions of civil society and a wide spectrum of elements that are enumerated in relation with civil society. The text is based on the assumption that freedom and democracy are closely linked to the existence of civil society; we can go as far as to say that they actually determine each other.
