Hereditary ichtyoses represent a heterogeneous group of disease with diffused keratinisation disorder. The article is devoted to a new classification of these diseases, which classes them as either syndromic or non-syndromic.
An overview is given, with brief characteristics of the various type of ichtyoses, with focus on the non-syndromic forms. New progress is mentioned, in uncovering the molecular causes of these diseases, which simplifies diagnosing them and at the same time opens up the space for new possibilities in genetic counselling, prenatal diagnostics and in the future, maybe even gene therapy.
